Democrats Had Their Chance on Guns; They Walked Away

Minnesotans are being sold a story. Democrats talk tough on gun control, claim they care about public safety, and hold press conferences after every tragedy. But when they had full control of the state government in 2023, with the governor, House, and Senate, they refused to take the toughest steps. They drafted and debated assault weapon bans, high-capacity magazine limits, and stronger storage laws in private, then quietly buried them. Leadership decided their political careers mattered more than public safety. A few vulnerable Democrats in rural districts refused to support real reform, and party leaders backed down.

Now, after another mass shooting, Governor Tim Walz is calling for a special session and blaming Republicans for not taking action. It’s a stunt. He knows full well that Democrats no longer have the votes. He knows his proposal will not pass. What he wants is headlines, press photos, and another fundraising cycle. He wants voters to forget who controlled the Capitol just two years ago, and who refused to act when action was needed.

This isn’t just a one-time failure. It’s a pattern. Democrats talk about reform in speeches and emails, but govern with caution and compromise that leave real solutions on the table. They pass half-measures that look good in campaign ads and call it progress. They avoid the bills that would actually make a difference. Now they want Republicans to carry the weight of their failures.

Republicans, in contrast, have been consistent. They have opposed measures that punish law-abiding citizens while supporting real solutions: tougher penalties for repeat offenders, more funding for mental health, and better security for schools. They don’t play political games or exploit tragedies for fundraising. They govern based on principle, not poll numbers.

We need the right solutions to the right problems. Gun control is not a one-size-fits-all answer, and pretending it is won’t make our communities safer. Real progress means addressing the deeper issues, investing in mental health, strengthening families, and fostering cultural changes that reduce violence at its roots.

Democrats had every opportunity. They had the power, the public support, and the responsibility. They chose politics over principle and optics over outcomes. Now they want to rewrite history and point fingers at Republicans. Minnesotans deserve leaders who actually lead, who keep their promises, and who protect citizens instead of campaigning on tragedies. Republicans stand for consistent, practical solutions. Democrats? They had their chance, and they walked away.
